Downtown Condo conversion

A place of lodging has stood at Fifth and Main since 1831. The Lahr House as it looks now dates to the mid 1880s and now houses apartments. The Knickerbocker, Indiana's oldest continuously-operating tavern in its original location, is on the first floor on Fifth Street.

In the 1980s, when the railroad ran down the middle of the street, Amtrak's ticket office and waiting room were in the Lahr.

Lafayette has many historic brick homes. I never even made it up to the Ninth Street Hill district, where the really magnificent ones are.

There has been a farmers' market on fifth street since the 1830s or 1840s. The market is open from May through October, 6:30 a.m. until noon on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and on Thursday evenings.

Crossing the Wabash River on the old Main Street bridge, now dedicated to pedestrians and bicycles

Downtown Lafayette is pleasantly free of most chains. Across the river is where you find the franchise restaurants – McDonald's, Panera, Starbucks etc. I saw a lot of college traffic going in and out of Scotty's on Friday night and Saturday
