Knox is the seat of Starke County, formed in 1835 and organized in 1859 and named for General
John Stark, commander of New Hampshire troops at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. Varying
explanations exist for the addition of the "e" to General Stark's name in naming the county. As of the
census of 2000, 23,556 people lived in Starke County, 3,704 of whom lived in Knox.

The Starke County Courthouse was designed by Wing & Mahurin Architects of Fort Wayne and
built 1897 - 1898 by contractors Caldwell & Drake of Columbus, Indiana.

Closed-off steps like these were on each side of the main entrance. They probably provided public
access to basement restrooms without entering the building. That was a common feature of many
courthouses of the period.

The white enclosure on the left is an elevator shaft that was added in recent years, running right up
through the center of the building. Messrs Wing and Mahurin might not be pleased.
