Engine House Number 5 was built in 1893 for horse-drawn apparatus, and
served the Fort Wayne Fire Department until 1959. After 1959, at least two
different owners started work on it and abandoned their projects short of
completion, and it was partially gutted and in disarray, but with solid
masonry, when the firefighters started work on it.
The massive, beautiful doors were stripped, extensively repaired and
refinished by a firefighter who does woodworking.
I've seen few homes with attention to finish and detail that this building shows.
